Epilepsy is classified into four main types in this revised classification: 1) focal; 2) generalized; 3) combined generalized and focal; 4) unknown. The group of combined generalized and focal epilepsy is a new terminology introduced in the type of epilepsy.

Self-limited epilepsy with autonomic seizures (SeLEAS) is a type of epilepsy syndrome that mainly affects young children. It's called self-limited because nearly all children will stop having seizures within 1 or 2 years. SeLEAS used to be known as Panayiotopoulos syndrome.

Epilepsy happens as a result of abnormal electrical brain activity, also known as a seizure, kind of like an electrical storm inside your head. And because your brain controls so much, a lot of different things can go wrong. You may have periods of unusual behaviors, feelings and sometimes loss of awareness.

This subgroup has been previously referred to as “Sunflower Syndrome”, due to sun-seeking behavior as they turn their faces to the sun as a light source at seizure onset 87. This subgroup can be termed “Epilepsy with Eyelid Myoclonia With Prominent Photic Induction”.
